After winning the 2021 World Championships and becoming downhill’s most decorated rider, Greg Minnaar, a.k.a. “The Goat”, got off to a slow start in the 2022 UCI DH World Cup series. Finishing up the first round, Greg headed back to Morzine in the French Alps—home to the Santa Cruz Syndicate headquarters and one of his favourite training destinations—to fine-tune his bike, body, and mind for the remainder of the season.

Finding the flow on the DH race bike is key for top-level athletes. In Off The Clock, Greg and his mechanic Lyle Hyslop, work closely to identify and tackle obstacles with the bike to unlock possibilities on track. Together, they fine-tune Greg's bike to achieve a comfortable and confidence-inspiring baseline setup for the following races.

Alongside his commitment to early hours in the gym and working on his mental game, Greg focuses on training rides that level up his bike fitness and skills needed to charge hard in the next block of racing. In recent years, the Santa Cruz Bullit eMTB has surprisingly become one of his favourite training tools—giving him the versatility and ability to ride for longer and get more DH laps in every ride. Searching for seconds on the clock, Greg proves it’s all about the quality of time spent off the clock.

"The eBike came into my life in lockdown. This was a tool that I can train on, do twice the distance on this mountain, get to the top three or four times, and get more downhilling out of it. There's no better way to ride than being able to ride most days on a bike that's so similar to a downhill bike." — Greg Minnaar

Unfortunately, while adding some last minute polish in practice at Val di Sole, Greg had a "get off," sidelining him for finals. Greg is doing ok and we wish him all the best for his recovery. Looking forward to watching him come back in 2023 with his near unmatched grit and dedication to the sport.
