About the film
Long Live Chainsaw reveals the meteoric rise, untimely death and long-lasting legacy of Canadian downhill mountain bike legend, Stevie Smith.
In 2016, the mountain bike world was stunned by the loss of Stevie Smith. Raised by a devoted single mom in humble surroundings, Stevie's unwavering belief not only propelled him to become the best in the world but inspired everyone he touched to believe in their own impossible dreams. A true story, Long Live Chainsaw is a mountain bike film about an underdog overcoming the odds. Known as the "F1 of cycling", downhill had long been dominated by Europeans before 'The Canadian Chainsaw' became the unlikeliest of heroes.
The live screening of Never in the Way is scheduled as part of; Overland + Films | Nov 7 | 7:30pm | Jenny Belzberg Theatre
Virtually, Never in the Way will be shown as part of the Send it! – Mixed Films program.
About the film
Chicago-based bike messenger, Nico Deportago-Cabrera, sees city maps like a central nervous system. Everything’s connected. Roads and buses and people and cars, all carrying bits of information around a giant organism and making it live and breathe. ‘The point,’ he says, ‘is to never be in the way. If you’re never in the way, then you’re always right where you need to be.’
In cities, we each play a part in making the hectic network thrive. But for many, including Nico, there’s an undeniable draw to wide-open spaces. In Never in the Way, Nico ventures to the Arizona desert with his Checkpoint to unplug and explore an unknown landscape that’s starkly different from the daily chaos of Chicago. From Flagstaff to Phoenix, he connects the dots in his own way, guided by the spirit of adventure and unlimited by schedules or commitments. In the end, he finds something you only get when you’re far from what you know: perspective.
A Dog’s Tale will be shown as part of the virtual Live Your Dream – Mixed Films program.
About the film
Millions of our best friends enjoy their homes and lives in metropolitan areas, but there’s something about the primal instinct of feeling the forest floor under your paws and smelling a thousand different smells all at once. The freedom of the trail is what we long for. This is a trail dog’s life, one cherished by both dogs and their humans every time they head out for a ride together.
