In one week, Thomas Vanderham linked together his favorite trails in one, non-stop road trip from Kamloops, BC to Utah. This is his Trail Crawl.

Anthill Films is excited to announce, Dream Capture, a new 5-part series of short mountain bike stories. Presented by Sony and released throughout the 2013 season, each short story will be shot exclusively with Sony’s new Action Cam.

EPISODE 1: Thomas Vanderham’s TRAIL CRAWL

There’s nothing like flowing through your favorite trail. And anyone who’s ventured out to trail networks in different regions knows how great it is to ride through new forests, features and dirt with new friends. So when SONY gave Thomas Vanderham the opportunity to link together his favorite trails in a non-stop road trip he started making plans. Here’s what Vanderham had to say about being a part of the Dream Capture project:

“I think every rider out there can relate to a dream week of riding. My goal with Trail Crawl was to ride as many of my favorite spots as physically possible in a week and capture every single moment on the Action Cam. It was a crazy trip and one I’ll remember for a long time. Thanks to everyone who came to ride with me and the crew!”

The Trail Crawl kicked off at the infamous Kamloops Bike Ranch with a bunch of locals, including Graham Agassiz and Matty Miles. Followed by a quick hop to the Sunshine coast for a session with the Costal Crew’s Kyle Norbraten and Dylan Dunkerton. Then it was back to the mainland for a rock smashing session with Adam Billinghurst in Pemberton, and some dirt roosting in Squamish with local shredders, Luke and Reece from the C4 crew. Next, we met up with the guys from Freehub Mag to hit the flowy trails of Bellingham Washington and then made a mad dash down the coast for a pinner trail ride in Hood River Oregon with the Dakine crew.

The first five days of the trip covered a lot of ground in the pacific North West. But to get all of Thomas’ favorite trails to fit into one week, it only made sense to jump on a plane to link Oregon with southern Nevada. An obligatory night was spent in Sin City that resulted in a more “traditional” crawl. But it wasn’t long before Thomas and the crew got back on schedule and laid tracks on the slick rock of Moab Utah with his friends from Western Spirit Cycling. The Crawl ended on a high note with a stop at the original Rampage site for a run down King Kong, and some of the other epic ridgeline descents that the zone is known for.

After one week, The Trail Crawl had condensed an insane amount of riding, into one continuous blur of great people, good times, rad trails, amazing places and maybe a few beers.

Trail Crawl Stats:

Kilometers Covered: 6680km

After 3,000 photos submitted and 28,000 votes, we are excited to announce the winner of the "Love Your Trail" contest...

Thanks everyone who was part of the “Love Your Trail” contest. We were totally overwhelmed by the number of entries we received – almost 3,000 photos were submitted, with more than 28,000 total votes cast. It was awesome to come in every morning and check out the new entries from all over the world. At the end of the day we had to narrow it down to the top 10 photos with the most votes so we could pick a winner… but it wasn’t easy.

The Top 10

From the top 10 we had the tough job of picking a winner and there was quite a bit of debate between the crew. After a couple rounds of secret ballots we selected our winner. We felt the winning photo best represented true dedication and love of trails from the top 10 finalists. So a huge CONGRATS to Slawek Potasz from Poland… you are the proud new owner of a complete, fully customized Strength in Numbers Session 9.9!

And the Winner is…

This great prize would not have been possible with out the support of our amazing sponsors. Thank you so much Trek, Shimano, Easton and PRO for helping put together a truly beautiful bike.

Thanks again to everyone who was a part of the contest. Happy Holidays and see ya in the New Year!

Words by Richard Cunynghame

The points start collecting from the very first beep of the season at round one. The pressure of their presence sits on riders’ shoulders all year. The ticking clock may stop after each run but the abacus never stops, it only pauses between races to coil the riders springs even tighter. Until eventually the chips are counted at the final round.

Greg Minnaar knows they don’t accumulate themselves, “It’s hard, the sport’s really tough, to keep coming back, stay uninjured and to be consistent.” The last two seasons his count has been short and left him in second, missing the series by an expansive 465 points in 2011, he’s closed that down to only 98 points at the end of 2012’s seven events.

84 points behind Greg in 2011, Gee Atherton has closed in too. 2012 saw his count stop just 39 shy of second place in the series, “You have to review what you’ve done. The years you don’t win are the ones you learn the most from. I’ve learnt a lot this year and I’ll be putting that into place for next season.”

Riders travel from one side of the planet to the other, surroundings change from nation to nation but the battle for every single point remains constant and the frustration of them slipping through a riders fingers is evident, “I need to sort something out,” says Greg, “I don’t think there’s much I can change. I think what I’m doing works, I need to just figure out those race runs a little more, I didn’t really challenge Gwinny as much as I’d like.”

And that’s the man who’s had his race runs sorted out, Aaron Gwin. Well mostly – there’s always imperfections in a masterpiece. There have been lows as well as the highs in Aaron’s last two seasons and he’s aware all the other riders will pounce at any chance. Even when he knows he’s done a lot, he’s never quite sure if it’s enough right down to the event when the series is clinched, “All weekend the pressure of the overall was playing on my mind. As usual Greg kept it close, as he always does, rider after rider came down and I kinda didn’t want to watch. For me the overall is the number one goal. It worked out all right, so I was stoked.”

Aided by the fact the riders never duel it out to each others faces, there are connections through common sponsors and friendships off the track. It is more the terrain that is overcome. Despite that, the fight will only ever become more intense. The margins are minimal and the challengers strong. That’s what will entice those that won to dig deeper and those that lost out to search for that perfection. When looked at in hindsight, a perfect season is so completely unattainable. The challenge stays true to the terrain, uneven, ever-changing and exhilarating. Every rider’s campaign will contain imperfections, it’s just a matter of how they minimise them and how few they can get away with.

As filmmakers we’ve had the privilege to be present for some great moments in a few riders’ careers. Whether it’s a high-risk move, a contest or a race, it’s always cool to see vision become reality.

Five years ago we filmed a segment for Seasons about a young, up-and-coming downhiller named Stevie Smith. Back then, Stevie was being shuttled almost everyday by his mom and was working part time at Tim Hortons serving donuts and coffee. Ever since, we’ve been cheering Stevie on as he worked steadily towards the goal of being on top of a world cup podium… knowing sooner or later it was going to happen.

We don’t actually film world cup races very often, so it was an unforgettable moment for the Anthill crew to be there in the finish corral when Stevie crossed the line in Hafjell and claimed his first ever world cup victory. Luckily we had our cameras rolling and were able to capture a few shots from the big day.

To celebrate Stevie’s accomplishment, The Collective has made his segment from Seasons available online. Check it out and you’ll see he had the vision back then… and now he’s made it real. Congrats Stevie – you’ve earned it!

Seasons is now available for download on iTunes.

With unprecedented access to land, British Columbia is home to more mountain bike trails per capita than anywhere else in the world. From old growth rain forests to barren grasslands, BC’s diverse landscape allows for every variety of trail to exist in one place. In BC, you can experience the evolution of mountain biking through the trails. From beaten down jumps on a vacant lot to massive back-country booters; from first descents that have never seen the tread of a tire to machine-made masterpieces. Trails connect all mountain bikers, and in BC, trail builders are the force that bring riders together.
